Mrs. Straubel teaches History & Government at GHCA.
Well, another year has ended, mixed feelings about that. Excited for all the accomplishments and learning that has taken place, but also sad to see good friends move on, especially all the seniors. But I know they'll show up from time to time and let us know how things are going. We just had our freshmen picnic at the Duff mansion, we used the pool for the first of the season, brrrrr. Mrs. Duff put together an awesome, fun, survivor game and the boys tortured each other with pellets. I think they really enjoyed that. Well, now they are officially sophomores, yikes. Hope they all have a great summer and take our challenge to find a way to SERVE this summer. Once God fills them with the joy of serving it could become contagious and start something big and amazing for God.
Just a reminder to Junior students to do a little searching of WWII topics. What interests you the most? If possible start to gather any resources that you can use this fall to enhance your research paper.
Again it's been a great year and I hope to enjoy some quality time with a couple of cute young boys from Hermon (my grandchildren) and also those handsome young men from Littleton (my sons). More baseball games, yeah!!!
When you remember those serving their country in your prayers, remember my two soldiers as they serve over seas this year. Thanks, much appreciated. :)

Well, things are winding down and we are nearing finals. All of my classes have been going well. Most have done a major internet or webquest project which is fairly new, so takes some time adjusting to time scheduling etc.
9th Grade - Freshmen are finishing a unit on North America. One of the greatest things you can do for your child is to take them out of the state, explore our great country and world. This also helps them appreciate the great state and area they now live in. 9th Grade final is on Wednesday, May 26th over the entire book. The test will mainly focus on the larger countries and concepts. They may need to practice finding longitude and latitude coordinates. There will also be a test that Tuesday just over North America.
10th Grade - Sophomores have watched a video series over the French Revolution and Napoleon. They will be required to know Chapter 17 for the test. They need to review and do some digging on their own as we attempt to prepare them for more higher levels of testing rather than just memorizing. Their final will be Wednesday, May 26, over Chapter 17 the French Revolution and Napoleon.
11th Grade - Juniors are working together on a webquest about the Reconstruction period following the Civil War. This was a major turning point in our country and how African-Americans would be treated as they are released from slavery. Since we began the year with WW I, we have made a pretty thorough cycle through the early history of our country. The Juniors will have their last test over Ch. 17, the Reconstruction period, on Thursday, May 27.
Thank you for the opportunity to teach your children about our country and our world through a Christian worldview. I have loved this year and can't wait to add more technology to next year's plans. Have a great summer! Mrs. Straubel
This past week has been a reminder that not only is spring here but summer is right around the corner as our rooms have been stuffy.
9th Grade - the freshmen have been using their creative hands-on abilities to create their own maps of a country. This is reemphasizing the themes of geography, showing how the lay of the land determines so much for a people. They've also been reminded of the important elements of a map and while doing that learning quite alot about their specific country. Next we'll move on to North America. You'd be surprised how much they don't know about our Canadian or Mexican neighbors.
10th Grade - We have been learning about the life of Martin Luther and some of the theological arguments he made during the middle ages. We watched a movie on his life, which was a good visual tool. There will be a test next week as we finish the Protestant Reformation.
11th Grade - We have been watching a few sections from Ken Burns' Civil War series. It also shows the culture and highlights real people and events, which can be graphic at times.
12th Grade - We have enjoyed watching and working on budgets, savings, and breaking myths about credit and debt. Very interesting. We also heard some valuable info on how to buy a used car from the infamous Wayne Watson. We thank him for sharing his time with us. We also got some personal and up close advice from GHCA's own technical expert on protecting our identity online and especially with social networking tools. Thank you Mr. Surran for taking time out as we know it is valuable. We will follow through with that information this week.
Seniors are getting nervous and excited and everything else as they prepare for graduation. Should be a good one. Bring your hanky!! Mrs. Straubel
Hope you all have a great April vacation!!
Well, the year is off to a good start. We've had a chance to get to know each other a bit better at the retreat and through some classroom games.
9th Grade is beginning some longitude and latitude work and can really stretch the brain, but is quite fun.
10th Grade is jumping right into the beginning of civilization and then we will focus on Asia.
11th Grade have been given quite a bit of time in class to search for a topic in and around WWII that they will be doing a research paper on. Parents, feel free to guide them into subjects that your family is interested in or that you may have resources on at home, or that you know will be of interest to your student.
12th Grade is still going through the "Why we need government" process. There is a lot of Biblical application in our book that is very interesting to ponder how we as Christians should be involved in government.
