Teacher Feature

Learn more about GHCA's Faculty as Mr. Zimmerman Interviews each teacher

About the "Teacher Feature"

The Teacher Feature is designed to acquaint you with "another side" of our Academy teachers in addition to their professional lives. Each month, an interview and a few photo clips of a teacher will appear in the Teacher Feature. We have great people serving here at the Academy, and we want you to get to know and appreciate them. - Mr. Zimmerman

Mr. Stan Harris

What do you do for fun?

I like to help people. I have been doing some landscaping for someone, just finishing a brick patio. Though I enjoy playing all instruments, piano is my favorite. Except for tennis, I play all sports having participated in collegiate basketball, soccer, and volleyball at Bob Jones University. I mold and build things in my wood shop in the basement of my parents' house and Pastor Wayne's shop. After all, Jesus was a carpenter. And in my vacation mode, my favorite spot is Virginia Beach where I can play beach volleyball and soccer.

What books or books have you recently read?

The Bible and New Testament survey (commentary)

How did you spend the summer?

I worked at our family restaurant , Winnie's Restaurant and Dairy Bar, in Presque Isle. I also renovated the GHCA music room , carpeted three classrooms and sanded and varnished a high school classroom. I lead a group on a mission trip to Costa Rica . The highlight came when after carrying all those cement blocks, exhausted, the young people still had the vigor to minister in church that night.

Of what church are you a member and in what ministries do you participate?

County Road Baptist Church -- Music,; I have done pulpit supply and travelled doing piano concerts. I also acted as interim pastor at State Street Baptist Church for about eight months and taught youth classes.

Do you have a life verse? Why have you adopted it?

Isaiah 41:10 Fear not; for I am with thee; for I am thy God ... No matter what situation may come my way, this verse assures me I am stuck in the palm of God' s hand.

What have you done recently to better yourself professionally?

I am readying myself for my platform exam in defense of my masters thesis through George Mason University . I am also exploring a transfer to the University of Maine where with a 45 minute Aria performance , I could receive my Masters in performance.

What makes you want to get up in the morning?

Knowing I have a job to do. My passion is music and helping others discover their abilities and their passion. I look forward to the Academy working relationship. I really care for students that struggle. I want to be an encouragement to as many people who I come in contact with.

What do you like about GHCA?

Change - Though some are afraid, they are not afraid to act on the change. The staff has been tried as by fire and has come forth as gold. I like being a part of that vision , for example, the band room. It will attract the students.

If you could design your dream school, what would it look like?

In the center of the campus would be an amphitorium for chapel with the school built around it. The "core" of the academics. And , of course, you gotta have a huge fine arts program.
